As a webhost, power represents a significant part of the operating cost expenses. Therefore it is very important for STRATO to consume as little energy as possible in its data centers. It is not only beneficial for the earnings and lower production costs but also for the environment. The membership in The Green Grid has therefore been a benefit to STRATO in different ways.
On the technical side, there have been many inputs and new approaches provided by the working groups and best practices which STRATO could use to improve energy efficiency in its own data centers. The company has followed the Green Grid’s advice to “measure, measure and measure” and has implemented PUE which has led to continuous improvements. STRATO has improved the PUE from 1.8 to 1.6 within 18 months and aims to reach 1.4 by the end of 2010.
Furthermore, The Green Grid is exactly the right platform for STRATO to demonstrate its efforts to help reduce power consumptions in data centers. STRATO would like to standardize energy efficiency in data centers in order to make it comparable. Membership in this consortium helps STRATO to meet partners, corporations and companies that follow the same aim.
