I’ve got some good news for the in-memory data grid aficionados out there! Here are my picks for the top three enhancements the WXS V8.6.1.1 update brings.

1. Supports JCache

That’s right. WebSphere eXtreme Scale V8.6.1.1 now supports JCache, which is the industry standard for Java-caching APIs. JCache provides a standard API for developers, allowing you to easily build JCache-compatible applications.

JCache standardizes caching for Java objects in a way that gives you flexible and efficient implementations of distributed caches. Now that WebSphere eXtreme Scale V8.6.1.1 supports JCache, you can make applications that leverage caching portability between caching implementations across your deployment.

2. A new Grid Template Management UI tool

Grid Template Management is a new user-interface (UI) tool in the WebSphere eXtreme Scale Liberty Deployment (XSLD) dashboard console. This tool allows you to upload and create your own customized grid template based on your own WXS configurations.

You can create customized grid instances in XSLD rather than using the previously available basic templates. Why is this important?  You get more control and customization. The new tool will build a customized grid template based on what’s in a user’s .XML descriptor files, not a one-size-fits-all template. Then, based on this custom grid template, a user can create their own grid instances.

3. Ubuntu 16 Platform support

Last but not least, WebSphere eXtreme Scale V8.6.1.1 now includes Ubuntu 16 platform support to deliver even better value for your scale-out performance. Ubuntu 16 brings economic and technical scalability to your data center, whether it’s public or private.
