IBM continuous Storage leadership
For the sixth consecutive year, IBM has been named a Leader in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for General-purpose Disk Arrays report for 2018.
According to Gartner ”Vendors in the Leaders quadrant have the highest composite scores for their Ability to Execute and Completeness of Vision. A vendor in the Leaders quadrant has the market share, credibility, and marketing and sales capabilities needed to drive the acceptance of new technologies. These vendors demonstrate a clear understanding of market needs. They are innovators and thought leaders with well-articulated plans that customers and prospects can use when designing their storage infrastructures and strategies. In addition, they have a presence in the five major geographical regions, consistent financial performance and broad platform support.”[1]
“The value of IBM’s ongoing leadership in the general-purpose storage array sector should not be underestimated,” Joe Regan- Director of Sales at Levi, Ray & Shoup, Inc, IBM Platinum Partner. “General Purpose Arrays are a very important market segment to our business. IBM’s strong reputation and award-winning Spectrum Virtualize give us a power offering to approach new prospects and deliver them industry-acclaimed solutions for their data-driven multicloud enterprises. It’s an advantage that no other storage vendor provides us.”
Though IBM Storage has been an industry leader in developing and bringing to market innovative new technologies such as Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe), flash,[2] software-defined storage,[3] and modern data protection, we still provide a wide range of general-purpose storage solutions:
- The IBM Storwize family offers all-flash and hybrid configurations to meet the unique data storage requirements of companies with entry to mid-sized application workloads and limited IT budgets. Because they still need all of the features and capabilities demanded in business-critical environments, it also extends enterprise class data services to >440 arrays optimizing CAPEX, OPEX, and lowering operational manpower. Along with the highly successful and affordable Storwize V5000 series, IBM has recently introduced an entirely new NVMe-enabled Storwize V7000 platform that substantially increases Storwize performance, extends NVMe into IBM midrange storage solutions, and offers both all flash and hybrid configurations, giving users flexibility for their storage budgets.
- IBM DS8880 storage systems are where you turn when your mission-critical applications require the highest availability possible. DS8880 is the number one storage solution used with IBM Z[4] because the family offers the deepest integration available for z/OS and provides the levels of reliability, capability, and extremely high availability demanded in mission-critical environments. Within our DS8880 data systems we’ve continued to innovate, adding native tiering to the public cloud, as noted in this year’s MQ report, and enhancing our zHyperLink technology to further accelerate storage performance.
Integrated with our general-purpose storage arrays, IBM provides industry-acclaimed software-defined storage solutions that provide the widest range of functionality in the industry. You can leverage the advantages of container technology, rely on powerful modern data protection features, and transform your storage systems into world-class multicloud environments with only the click of a mouse.
IBM has been a leader in the storage array marketplace since we brought out the first commercial hard drive in 1956–the massive IBM 305 RAMAC, which had fifty 24-inch disks, weighed over a ton, and cost $160,000.[5] Though technology has certainly changed a lot since then, IBM innovation and investment across the general-purpose storage array marketplace has not.
It’s nice to see that again this year, leading industry observers have reminded our customers, business partners, and the public of this simple fact. Learn more here.
