This session offers an in-depth look at EU initiatives, the roles of ICT in Europe, and Europe’s advancements in sustainable data centres, cloud computing, and new business opportunities through green ICT. Information is provided about various EU projects, including FIT4Green.
FIT4Green contributes to ICT energy reduction efforts by reducing the energy demand in data centres. It creates an energy-aware layer of plug-ins for data centre management and automation systems. Located on top of the current data centres' management tools, the plug-ins orchestrate the allocation of ICT resources and turn off unused equipment without giving up on compliance to Service Level Agreements (SLA) and Quality of Service (QoS). The project’s achieved target was to save at least 20% in direct server and network devices energy consumption and to induce an additional 30% savings of cooling energy due to reduced cooling needs. FIT4Green runs pilots to validate the plug-ins using three representative data centre typologies: service/enterprise portal, supercomputing grid and cloud computing.
