2013 Forum – Engaging the Missing Link in IT Resource Efficiency
Data centers need to use more energy. Although the overhead costs of power and cooling can be reduced, powering even the most energy-efficient IT equipment is a huge waste of money if it sits idle for most of the time (as is the case with the majority of data centers today). Driving up server utilization and increasing the energy IT infrastructures use represents the biggest opportunity to more effectively use our expensive data centers. However, this opportunity requires that developers write software to use IT resources more efficiently and effectively. This session explores the interface between data center managers and the developer and the critical role that incentives, software design, and operations play in improving the effectiveness of our data center investments.
