The first vendor-neutral temperature standard was published by ASHRAE in 2004. Previously, that temperature was often set at 20°C (68°F) due to worst-case scenarios and anecdotal findings. The 2004 ASHRAE recommended temperature range is 20-25°C (68-77°F).
Over the past decade, the recommended temperature range has expanded to 18-27°C (64-81°F). The permissible temperature range has been extended to 5 to 45°C (113 to 41°F). Rapid changes are also seen in the humidity range.
As a result of that expansion, there has been greater opportunity for more economical and reliable cooling solutions to be deployed around the world. There are also cooling solutions that do not require a refrigerator.
In this talk, I discussed some of the insights needed for several key decision-making aspects in data center environmental quality.
